4x5 Film

Statement

These images were taken in the spring semester of the 2022 academic year while attending graduate school. This course was my first dive into film as a medium and I used three projects over the semester to consider the intersection between ritual, death, and self-portraiture, which culminated in the third and final project of this class being adopted into my Master's thesis project. Here, I explore the weight of film as a medium for documentation and expression, considering how the physical handling of the materials alters the aura of the work. Both projects seek connection with an aspect of the human condition that is often avoided: mortality. Within my self-portraiture, I utilize double exposure to render the body as something impermanent and ephemeral. The series of photographs depicting cemeteries allowed me to meditatively connect with the spaces that are the final resting places of some departed individuals I knew in life.
